Bobby Thomson, the outfielder for the New York (baseball) Giants who hit the famed “Shot Heard ‘Round The World,” died last night at the age of 86.
Thomson’s home run came in the bottom of the ninth inning during the last game of a playoff series between the Giants and the Brooklyn Dodgers (it’s amazing to think New York City was once home to three baseball teams). The Giants, down 4-1 entering the last frame, won the game 5-4, and clinched the 1951 National League Pennant. (Sorry to say that the Yankees would go on to beat the Giants in the World Series that year.)
Rest in peace, sir.
